A Dayton police officer shot and wounded a suspect Thursday who was a passenger in a stolen vehicle, according to police.

Two officers began following a maroon Monte Carlo around 10:28 a.m. in the area of Upland and Hoover avenues. The vehicle was reported stolen Wednesday from a Wendy’s on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.

The vehicle stopped at 916 Stolz Ave. near Germantown Pike when it crashed into a fence and two men, age 17 and 21, tried to escape. The passenger had a semi-automatic pistol, according to Police Chief Richard Biehl.

“He emerged from the vehicle with gun in hand,” Biehl said.

Biehl declined to identify Thursday either the officers or the suspects, but said eventually their names would be released. The department could release more information in a press conference Friday, he said.

Tom Biedenharn, city of Dayton spokesman, said the officers would be placed on paid administrative leave.

The officer shot the man one time. It’s unclear where the man was hit. He was wounded in the hand and the leg after a police dog took him down, according to Biehl.

The driver of the vehicle, who also was not identified, was apprehended.

Officers with Internal Affairs are investigating the shooting. It’s unclear if the officer will be put on administrative leave.

On Wednesday, a man sitting in his car at the Wendy’s on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard said he was approached by two men at about 2:10 p.m. and asked for a lighter.

According to a Dayton Police incident report, as one of the men smoked a cigar they asked the driver questions about his vehicle. Then one of men opened he driver’s door and forced him out of the car.

He told police that he only gave up the keys after being beaten and believing the men intended to shoot him. The two left with a third man believed to be standing nearby as a lookout, according to the report.

Dayton police are expected to release more details during a press conference scheduled today.
