COLUMBUS —
Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Schuster and Stivers School for the Arts are among the eight winners of the 2013 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio.
The Ohio Arts Council announced Monday evening that the awards will be presented at a luncheon ceremony honoring the winners and members of the Ohio Legislature at noon on May 15 at the Columbus Athenaeum downtown.
The Schusters are posthumous winners in the category of arts patron, while Stivers is a winner in the category of arts education, the Ohio Arts Council said.
PNC Bank (statewide) was named a winner for business support of the arts.
Dr. Benjamin Schuster, a pioneer in Dayton cardiology who with his wife Marian became a generous benefactor of Dayton-area arts and health-care organizations, died in August. He was 89. Marian Schuster died in 2007 at age 80.
The couple’s legacy includes Benjamin and Marian Schuster Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Dayton, the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Heart Hospital at Kettering Medical Center and the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Hall in Wright State University’s Creative Arts Center. The Schusters became the lead donors for the performing arts center that bears their names when they announced a planned gift of $8 million that would go to the project after their deaths, according to the Victoria Theatre Association and Arts Center Foundation.
Other winners were named in the categories of community development and participation, arts administration and individual artist.
Winners will receive an original work of art by Susan Danko, a painter from Parma.
The 2013 awards selection committee consisted of five Ohio Arts Council board members and three members selected by Ohio Citizens for the Arts.
The luncheon is hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation.
