KETTERING —
A bicyclist who was hit and pinned under a RTA bus Sunday night was in fair condition as of Tuesday morning and is expected to recover, according to Kettering police.
Police said Paterne Uwizera, 19, was riding north on Woodman Drive about 6:20 p.m. Sunday and was crossing Forrer Boulevard in the west-side crosswalk. The bus, also northbound on Woodman, turned left onto Forrer, colliding with the bicyclist in the crosswalk.
Kettering police officer Ron Roberts said police don’t know yet whether the traffic light was green, or whether the pedestrian signal cleared Uwizera to cross. Roberts said the crash is still under investigation, with no citations issued or charges filed at this point.
Uwizera was dragged about 100 feet and was pinned under the chassis of the bus, but remained conscious. Roberts said a tow truck designed for tractor-trailers lifted the front end of the bus, so EMS crews could get Uwizera out. Roberts said Uwizera is expected to make a full recovery.
Police believed weather was a factor in the crash, citing poor visibility because of darkness and blowing rain.
Frank Ecklar, RTA director of planning and marketing, said his agency also investigates any crash involving RTA vehicles, calling it “a coordinated effort” with police.
Ecklar said no passengers on the bus complained of injuries Sunday. He said the driver will be held out of service until the investigation is complete.
