DARKE COUNTY —

A semi hauling thousands of chickens crossed the road and into a ditch Wednesday afternoon.

No one was injured, including 7,500 chickens that were aboard a semi trailer that overturned shortly after 2 p.m. in the 900 block of Peters Road.

The Darke County deputy on scene said the semi driver drifted to the right to avoid an oncoming vehicle and went over the side of a drop off.

The chickens were contained in crates and only three got loose before being corralled.

The chickens were off-loaded to another tractor trailer and are en route to a Campbell’s factory in Ontario, Canada, the deputy said.

The semi driver was not cited.
