UPDATED: Lightning, fire destroy iconic I-75 Jesus statue

MONROE, Ohio - "Butter Jesus", "Touchdown Jesus", "I-75 Jesus", call the well known statue of Jesus Christ along Interstate 75 at Solid Rock Church in Monroe what you want but the iconic structure is no more.

Authorities are saying that the 62-foot King of Kings statue was destroyed following an apparent lighting strike and fire during thunderstorms last night.

When fire crews arrived, Monroe Fire Chief Mark Neu said the statue was fully engulfed and the fire had spread to the attic area of the church's adjacent amphitheater.

There were no injuries and the fire was extinguished within an hour.

The statue, completed in 2004, was constructed of wood and styrofoam over a steel framework that was anchored in concrete and covered with a fiberglass mat and resin exterior, according to the church.

The structure was set to undergo renovations this summer.

Neu said that no damage estimate will be available until 10 a.m. this morning. He added that church leaders indicated to him they planned to replace and rebuild all that was lost in the blaze.

Because the fire was sparked by lighting, Neu said there will be no further investigation.
