Woman sentenced in crash that killed child

Staff Report

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

A woman convicted of vehicular manslaughter in a crash that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old apologized to the victim’s family in court today before she was sentenced.

Hannah Gough was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 60 of those days suspended. Gough’s license will also be suspended for two years, and she was ordered to pay more than $7,000 in restitution and a $500 fine.

She was also ordered to 200 hours of community service and will have to take a traffic safety school course and a remedial driving course.

Gough pleaded guilty last month to vehicular manslaughter, and in exchange, charges of vehicular homicide and assured cleared distance were dropped. Police said Gough crashed into the back of a minivan on West National Road last August, resulting in the death of five-year-old Lauren Drummond.

Drummond died after suffering head injuries in the crash, according to court documents. Her father, mother and 3-year-old brother were also riding in the minivan and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

Before Gough was sentenced, Drummond’s mother, Kelly Drummond, asked the judge to sentence Gough to the maximum penalty, stating that her “heart is broken” because her daughter is dead. She said Lauren’s family will pay for Gough’s actions for the rest of their lives.

Gough also apologized to Drummond’s family, stating “it was simply an accident.” She said she feels guilty spending time with her family while the Drummonds lost their daughter.
