Xenia teen arrested, parents notified of threat

XENIA —

A juvenile was arrested Monday night and parents were notified after the student threatened to commit violence at Xenia High School.

The high school student, whose age and identity was not released, was located and taken into custody on a probation violation, according to Xenia police Sgt. Peter Wiza.

The arrest comes after residents in Xenia Community Schools notified police about a threatening Facebook post.

Wiza said in the post the juvenile refers to the threat of violence that a student made at the Greene County Career Center. The Xenia student then claims he’s going to commit violence at the high school.

Career center parents were notified early Monday about an anonymous threat written on a bathroom stall that talked about killing people at the vocational school on Tuesday. The threat was discovered Dec. 11, but school officials said the notification was delayed because of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Ct.

Xenia schools Superintendent Deborah Piotrowski said students, staff members and others from the community contacted school officials immediately after the post was discovered. Piotrowski said the school principal took immediate action and the following message was sent to parents.

“Late this afternoon, a Xenia High School student placed a written threat on Facebook directed toward the student body at XHS. The XHS Principal worked swiftly with the Xenia Police Department to resolve the issue. The student who posted the threat is in custody, and will be subject to criminal and school discipline procedures. The student will not be in attendance at school on Tuesday.

“Please take time to discuss with your son or daughter, if they are age appropriate, the ramifications of making threats. Xenia Community Schools will take any and all threats as a serious danger toward our students and staff.

“The threat to students has been removed. Learning will go on as expected tomorrow and we look forward to a good day at school. The quick response of staff and students in notifying the administration of this danger was one of the most important aspects of resolving this issue so rapidly.”

Later, Piotrowski released additional comments as part of a lengthier message that was posted on the district’s website.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is always our number one priority.

“Today, in light of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, we asked all of our schools to review crisis plans. We also asked all administrators to reinforce school security and campus visitor procedures. It takes parents, students, staff and community working together to keep our schools safe places to learn.

“Late on Monday, December 17, 2012, a threat against students at Xenia High School was posted on Facebook. The XHS Principal, Mr. Ted Holop worked with the Xenia Police Department to swiftly address the student who made this threat. This student is now in police custody. The district worked together with the police to address the threat without delay. We take any and all threats seriously.

“The threat to students has been removed. Learning will go on as expected tomorrow and we look forward to a good day at school. The quick response of staff and students in notifying the administration of this danger was one of the most important aspects of resolving this issue so rapidly.

“As a district, this situation hits home to our staff members. We do think about these kinds of possibilities and in fact, we prepare for them. Our schools have crisis response plans in place that address a full range of emergency situations. We have lockdown procedures that we practice as a way to keep intruders from getting into classrooms and other parts of the school. Our drills are designed to prepare for emergencies, whether natural or man-made.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the students, parents, teachers and staff of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A brush with death reminds us all that the greatest gift is the breath of life. Like the people of Newtown, our children are our joy and our treasure. We will continue to do our best each day to protect our children, and to educate them for their future and the future of our community.”
