FAIRBORN —

Kathryn Westbeld and Makayla Waterman don’t wear capes and masks, but make no mistake, their powers aren’t ordinary.

And neither is their team.

Becoming the first Dayton area girls basketball program to advance to four straight state tournaments, Fairmont won its grudge match with rival Centerville 58-46 Saturday in a Division I regional final before 5,500 at Wright State’s Nutter Center.

The Firebirds (25-1), ranked No. 9 in the nation by MaxPreps, face Toledo Notre Dame (25-3) in the D-I state semifinals next Friday at 8 p.m. at Ohio State’s Schottenstein Center. Fairmont has finished state runner-up the last two years.

Capping its most successful season in history, Centerville, ranked eighth nationally by MaxPreps, finishes 26-2. It was the Elks’ first trip to the Elite Eight.

“To get (to state) four years in a row is unbelievable,” Fairmont coach Tim Cogan said. “It’s great to make history. We’re blessed.”

Said Westbeld: “We killed it.”

Centerville scored the game’s first basket for its lone lead and trailed 8-7 before a 19-4 run over a seven-minute span of the first and second quarters — fueled by nine points from Waterman — propelled the Firebirds in front 27-11. The closest Centerville got was nine with less than a minute to play.

Westbeld (13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals) and Waterman (16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists) were the main reasons.

“I probably had one of the worst games of my life the last time we played Centerville,” said Waterman of a 1-point performance in the Firebirds’ only loss this season. “I wasn’t thinking about anything else except coming out and proving to them and everyone that I’m a good player.”

Senior Alex Henning and junior Shannon Coffee led Centerville with 10 points each.

“We always expect Waterman to play well, she just hadn’t the first two times against us this year,” Centerville coach Adam Priefer said. “She did a fantastic job in the first half of helping her team convert and build their lead.

“It felt like they were on fire.”
