A winter storm watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Sunday morning through Monday morning when a wintry mix is expected with up to 8 inches of snow accumulation.

At least 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected to fall Sunday evening, with the potential for up to 8 inches northwest of Dayton by Monday morning, according to Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson.

Southeast of the city could see 3 to 6 inches, with the potential for a mix of rain in the late afternoon Sunday.

“Through early evening the snow will really pick up and remain persistent until early morning,” Simpson said. “Then it will lighten up towards morning. There will be a six hour period where we could easily see 4 inches accumulate, and that’s when the roads will really go downhill.”

Areas north and west of Dayton and Springfield will likely see all snow, while the cities and areas to the south and east could see temperatures rise above 32 degrees and some freezing rain mix in with the snow, Simpson said.

Schools in session on Monday could be on delays, but the snow will taper down Monday morning so cancellations are unlikely.

Simpson said fans headed to University of Dayton Arena for NCAA basketball games on Sunday should have good conditions on their way to the games, but the roads could be getting bad on the way home.

There will be two third round games played at UD Arena on Sunday, but the exact times have not yet been announced.

Temperatures on Sunday will be in the mid- to upper-30s and include increasing winds.

On Monday and Tuesday, temps will start in the mid-20s and reach the high- to upper-30s. Both days will be cloudy with a chance of snow showers.
