Named in honor of Bills owner and founder, Ralph Wilson, the stadium officially opened its doors in 1973. It replaced the dilapidated Buffalo War Memorial Stadium during the AFL/NFL merger. The original capacity of the venue featured space for over 80,000 patrons but has subsequently been reduced to approximately 73,000. The Buffalo Bills played their first playoff game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 1989 in what ended up being a 17-10 victory over the Houston Oilers in January, 1989.

The Grateful Dead performed live in 1989 and released the live DVD,Truckin' Up to Buffalo, to commemorate the experience.
